About This Item

Paris: Bibliotheque d'Education et de Recreation/ J. Hetzel et Cie, 1878. Leather. Very Good. 11" by 7.5". P. Philippoteaux; LaPlante. A smart early edition of Jules Verne's science fiction novel, also known as Off on a Comet; part of his 'Voyages Extraordinaires' series. An early edition of this work in a quarter morocco and pebbled cloth binding, with moire silk end papers and gilt decoration to the spine. Binder's blind stamp of 'LENEGRE REL' to the boards, referring to the French bookbinder Antoine Lenègre (1818-1867). All edges gilt. Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist best known for his thrilling adventure series, 'Voyages Extraordinaires'. This included works such as 'Journey to the Center of the Earth', 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' and 'Around the World in Eighty Days'. This work was originally serialised in Magasin d'Éducation and is written in the original French. Titled 'Off on a Comet' in English, this science fiction novel concerns a comet, which picks up thirty-six Europeans from Earth as it continues on its path. Illustrated with drawings by P. Philippoteaux, engraved by LaPlante. An 8-page publisher's catalogue (J) to the rear of the volume. Undated, dated through the advertisements. In a quarter morocco binding. Externally smart, with a few small marks to the boards, a small loss of cloth to the front board, some shelf wear to the extremities, and a little rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned but clean. Very Good
