About This Item

Indianapolis New York: The Bobbs Merrill Company, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo. Pp. [vi], vii-ix, [7], 17-314. Frontis. Black & white photograph of Butte, Montana, 1872. Illustrated throughout with black & white photographs on glossy stock. Bound in tangerine cloth with red lettering stamped on cover and spine. Small newspaper clipping pasted to rear endpaper - a note about Marcus Daly's wealth at date of death. Two white marks on cover; slight wear to head and tail of spine, but generally clean. In the color illustrated dust jacket, with original price of $3.00 intact on front flap. Dust jacket worn at edges. Withal, a bright, presentable copy. Marcus Daly, William A. Clark, F. Augustus Heinze and others created immense wealth by mining Butte's "richest hill on earth." The story has been told many times, yet Glasscock's account is perhaps the liveliest and, for us, the most readable.

Copper tycoon Clark, the one-term senator from Montana who bought his seat, was referred to by Twain as "the most disgusting creature that the republic has produced since Tweed's time.") His daughter, Huguette Clark, was the eccentric recluse who died in the 2010s after living 30 years in a hospital, preferring that to her 42-room Fifth Avenue apartment.

SMITH, 3606. The dust jacket, increasingly scarce, is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
