About This Item

Franklin Center, PA: The Franklin Library, 1978. Hardcover. Illustrations by Harlan M. Krakovitz. Small 4to. Full dark green calf with raised bands and elaborate gilt lettering and decorative rules and devices. 1121pp. All edges gilt. Illustrations, green moire silk endpapers, sewn-in green satin page marker. Fine. Pristine and perfect first of this limited edition, just preceding the Little, Brown & Company first trade edition. This World War Two historical fiction became a popular made-for-television miniseries in 1988, and this unusual copy bears signatures of two co-stars on matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards on an inner flyleaf: At top is ROBERT MITCHUM (1917-77; portrays Captain Victor "Pug" Henry), who signs large and bold in black ballpoint; below him is RALPH BELLAMY (1904-91; portrays Franklin D. Roosevelt), signs in rather light, black fineline. Book is housed in the Franklin Library's thin card stock slipcase with circular gold foil "First Edition Society" label and is also accompanied by their "Notes from the Editors" leaflet.

Synopsis

War and Remembrance is a novel by Herman Wouk, published in 1978, which is the sequel to The Winds of War. It continues the story of the extended Henry family and the Jastrow family starting on 15 December 1941 and ending on 6 August 1945. This article mainly describes the mini-series interpretation presented on American television in the 1980s. Wouk was the screenwriter as well as the author of the original book. This mini-series is now available on DVD with supplementary material.
