About This Item

Grosset & Dunlap, 1937-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover with scarce DJ, First Edition 1937 Grosset & Dunlap 216 pages. Very Good, in a VG DJ. Just a touch of shelf/edge wear to green cloth boards with black titles - corners lightly bumped. Lightly faded purple topstain. Minor shelf/edge wear and a few very small closed tears to original unclipped DJ - now in mylar. WWI endpapers. Glossy frontispiece with no internals and good paper dates this copy to the late 30's. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean and unmarked. Illustrations for DJ and frontispiece by J. Clemens Gretta. Because of the interest in air combat after World War I, Grosset and Dunlap put together a set of books by Thomson Burtis, Eustace Adams, and Al Avery (pseudonym of Rutherford G. Montgomery) and called the series Air Combat Stories For Boys. This is number 7 in a series of 16.(and the only one with a wrap-around DJ) The first seven books in the series were first published in the 1930s and are about exploits in the air during World War I and have WWI endpapers. The Yankee Flier portion of the series is about World War II and have WWII endpapers. This copy is Binding variant 3 per Mattson. Eustace Adams graduated from St. Lawrence University (New York) in 1915. His writing career began about 1928, and he published at least 128 stories between 1928 and 1953 in magazines such as 'The American Magazine' and 'Argosy'. He also wrote at least 20 novels, primarily between 1928 and 1932." Mr. Adams, the author of this flying series for boys is an experienced aviator and has had many thrilling adventures in the air -- both as a member of the famous Lafayette Escadrille in the World War and in the United States Naval Aviation Service flying with squadrons patrolling the Atlantic Coast. His stories reveal not only his ability to tell daring and exciting air episodes but also his first hand knowledge of modern aeroplanes and the marvelous technical improvements which have been made in the past few years. -- Grosset & Dunlap advertisement for the Andy Lane Series. Rear panel of DJ lists to Ted Scott, Castaways Of The Stratosphere published in 1935. Rear DJ Flap lists to War Wings published in 1937. Per AAC Boys Series Books by Axe, pg 57,58 and Mattson 01200 and 65800. A superb pre-war First Edition that still presents well in the original DJ. LOC SSS-12
