Two charts on one sheet showing the Dunkirk approaches. The larger chart from that of Blaeu's Pourtraict de la fameuse ville et havre de Duynckercke. With Rhumb lines, compass rose and scales. Townships and sandbanks indicated. Decorated with fleets of galleons off shore. With an inset panorama of Duynckercke [Dunkirk] after Jan Van Loon and a smaller coastal profile of Cales. The smaller chart showing the coast of Flanders, from Walchren [ Walcheren ] to Boloigne. Early hand coloured charts with later red ruled border on wide blank margins. Small tear without loss to lower blank margin, otherwise in bright and clean condition. Rare and attractive Sea Charts.

Francois-Seraphin Delpech, Paris, 1824; Hand colored stone lithograph of enigmatic Bourbon aristocrat Louis Philippe Joseph, Duke Of Orleans (1747-1793), whose dedication to the ideas of Rousseau led to his becoming an active supporter of the French Revolution, eventually giving up his own name and title in favor of "Philippe Egalité", for which act he became wildly popular. In the end, however, the complexities of political intrigue endemic to all revolutions resulted in his demise, and he was guillotined during the Reign Of Terror on November 30, 1793. Drawn, lithographed, and signed in the stone by French painter/printmaker Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse (1784-1844) one of the first of French artists to adopt the process, then in its infancy. The complete second half of the year, including the scarce Tricolour issue, which was published in blue, white and red. Binding and end papers are spotless. The newspaper is clean and tidy, with a few pages uncut. Slightly darkened and some minor edge wear, but overall an excellent example. Le Nain Jaune was a pro-Bonaparte political newspaper, openly displayed on Napoleon's return. At the second return of the Bourbons, the newspaper was suppressed. In 1816 Cauchois-Lemaire had fled to Belgium and the newspaper was published from there. A few pages at the front of the text affected by light foxing but overall a very good clean copy in a fine early leather binding by Austin & Sons Ltd, with their ticket pasted inside back cover. Full red calf, lavish gilt decoration to spine, leather title label in gilt, both boards with gilt ruling/ board edges and inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers, silk head and tailbands. College emblem to front board, in gilt. Marbled block edges. College prize label inside front cover. A lovely presentation of this interesting book.

London: Charles J. Skeet, 1859. First edition. A rare personal account of the Crimean War, written soon after the events described. Orange red buckram, with gilt titles to the spine. Darkened to the spine and with some marks to the boards. Binding is a little shaken, with a slight lean. Pages are a little darkened, with some foxing spots. Errata. Adverts for recent publications to rear. [vi], 351 [i], [4]. pp The author (anonymous here but Charles Townshend Wilson) was with the Coldstream Guards. He purchased his commission in 1839, was an Ensign by 1842, a captain in 1846 and Lt Colonel in 1854. He served at Alma, Balaclava and Inkemann, as well as at the Siege of Sebastapol. He received the Crimea Medal with 4 bars, and retired by sale in 1855. Died in 1887. 200 by 130mm (7¾ by 5 inches).
