About This Item
This is an amazingly well-preserved hardback first edition of classic sermons by the "prince of preachers", Dr. George W. Truett—a hard-to-find rare volume in excellent condition! The book opens with A Life Sketch of George W. Truett by the editor of the book, Dr. J. B. Cranfill; a fascinating insight into this great Baptist preacher of the 20th century. He became pastor of the First Baptist Church, Dallas, in September 1897, and remained there until his death in July 1944. During his 47-year pastorate, membership increased from 715 to 7,804 and a total of 19,531 new members were received, with total contributions $6,027,741.52. He was President of The Southern Baptist Convention 1927-29. Truett, in addition to his pastorate, for 37 summers he preached at the "Cowboy Camp Meetings" in west Texas. In addition, he preached to Allied Forces for six months in World War I by appointment of President Woodrow Wilson and made an address on Baptists and Religious Liberty on the Capitol steps in Washington, D. C. on May 16, 1920. In is antiquarian classic, Truett's Foreword concludes with this challenge: "To every soul in need of light and help; to every heart bowed under the weight of sin or grief or tears; to every one whose face is clothed upon with life's sunset glow; to every one tempted, discouraged sad-hearted or bereaved, this book is sent with the devout prayer that it may bring hope and comfort, and give them, each and all, new visions of the Master's grace and love." Another bonus in this classic volume is the overview by Rev. John E. White, The Man and the Preacher. The Contents are: I. We Would See Jesus, II. A Prayer For a Revival, III. Trumpeting the Gospel, IV. A New Testament Good Man, V. An Old Testament Good Man, VI. The Temptation of Our Saviour, VII. Intercessory Prayer, VIII. The Growth of Faith, IX. Christ's Message to the Weak, X. The Conquering Hosts of God, XI. The Supreme Gift to Jesus, XII. The Subject and the Object of the Gospel.
