A. L. Burt, New York, (circa 1899); 8vo, 634 pages; half leather; gilt titles; frontispiece illustration plate with guard tissue. Charles Kingsley’s absorbing adventure novel based upon the life of swashbuckling privateer Amyas Preston, who in 1595 joined forces with George Somers to capture Caracas, Venezuela during the Anglo-Spanish War. First published in 1855, the book was an instant success, and by 1897 had reportedly been reprinted thirty-eight times. An entry in the "Burt’s Library Of The World’s Best Books" select series, published between 1891 and 1904. No printed publication date, but circa 1899. Very Good, half calf, raised bands, gilt compartments, marbled boards, marbled end papers, top page edges gilt. Some leather surface rubbing, small chip in the blank bottom margin of four consecutive leaves, well clear of text on either side, gilding bright, binding tight, sound, and square, no signatures or any other markings of any kind. Front pastedown bookplate of Charles H. Folwell, notable owner and editor of the New Jersey Mirror newspaper from 1892-1946.
