About This Item

Salem, Massachusetts : Peabody Museum of Salem, 1987. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 11.5" by 9". Various. A very smart copy of this work on whaling prints, part of a limited edition published locally in Salem, Massachusetts. A selection, meticulously catalogued, of one of the great collections of whaling prints. Included in the Francis B. Lothrop Collection at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. It represents the whaling culture that predominated colonial northeast America, as well as whaling culture in other locations such as France, Japan, and more. The Francis Bacon Lothrop Collection at the Peabody Museum is a catalogued assemblage of over 600 items of whaling prints, much of which is included in this book. Over the course of his lifetime, Mr. Lothrop collected watercolours, oils, books, toys, ceramics, and other paraphernalia related to whales and whaling. This book was compiled and produced by Elizabeth Ingalls, former curator to the Lothrop Collection. Part of a limited edition printing of only 1,000 copies. Including twelve plates, in colour, collated and complete. Also including over 600 in-text printed reproductions from this collection, with corresponding descriptions and details about the works. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, excellent, with no discernible shelf wear. Only very minimal discolouration to the cloth to the extremities. Unclipped dust wrapper is excellent, with just a few small creases to the rear wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Near Fine
