About This Item
New York: Moorhead, Bond & Co., 1868. The author, a Scottish geologist, appears to argue that humankind was created by a higher power by adaption of a few basic designs, evolved towards complexity - not in a single 'creation' event; that physical surroundings also alter created beings; that the white race is clearly superior to others, and thus the most recent or highly evolved; that later 'races' are more civilized and will raise up or destroy lower races; and that both geologic and humanistic evolution suggest the antiquity of earth & man is much greater than was commonly supposed. Published to respond to mischaracterisations of two of the author's lectures at the Edinburgh Philosophical Institution in 1866. First American edition, published in Scotland a year earlier. Hardcover, as pictutred. Light wear, corners bumped & rubbed, a bit of silverfishing to rear cover; ink name & date on free endsheet. . First American Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Duodecimo.
