About This Item
Sydney: Allen & Unwin, 2005. Reprint ed.. Paperback small octavo, very good plus condition. 379 pp. Winner of the 2005 Miles Franklin Literary Award, 2005. In 1992, when William was 8 years old, he looked out from the back verandah and saw the mushroom cloud of a nuclear explosion. His father dead by fire and his mother plagued by demons of her own, William is cast upon the charity of his unknown uncle - an embittered old man living in the ruins of a once great station homestead (Kuran House, Queensland), and involved in secretive political work. It's a baffling and sinister new world for the boy, a place of decay and secret histories. A haunting, disturbing tale: part family saga, part history, part gothic thriller.
