About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. A notably fresh copy First edition, first impression. This "dramatic gothic adventure" was Aiken's first book in the Wolves Chronicles and was adapted in 1989 into a film staring Stephanie Beacham, Mel Smith, Richard O'Brien, and Jane Horrocks. The jacket blurb noted that the book was "a fantasy with a difference: readers will be convinced that every startling word is true". Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. Frontispiece and numerous illustrations in the text, all by Pat Marriott. Spine very slightly bumped, slight foxing to top edge; spine of jacket a little toned and rubbed at extremities, not price-clipped: a near-fine copy in like jacket.

Synopsis

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a children's novel by Joan Aiken, first published in 1963. Set in an alternate history of England, it tells of the adventures of cousins Bonnie and Sylvia and their friend Simon the goose-boy as they thwart the evil schemes of their governess Miss Slighcarp. The novel is the first in the "Wolves" Saga, a series of books set during the fictional 19th century reign of King James III.
