A first edition copy of this interesting book regarding the planting and cultivating of forest trees and underwoods, written and published by William Cobbett. The first edition. Rebound in half calf with gilt lettering to the spine. A comprehensive guide to the planting, cultivating and cutting down of forest trees and underwoods. With detailed descriptions of the growth, size and uses of each type of tree. Including species in both England and America. William Cobbett was an English writer, politician and farmer from Surrey. He was very politically active during the beginning of the nineteenth century, helping to further the Reform Act of 1832. Complete with one page of Mr. Cobbett's other publications to the rear of the book. With a bookplate to the front free endpaper and several ink stamps throughout for the Bibliotheca ex oblatorum S. Caroli, Bayswater. Bookplate for one 'William J. Lescher' to the front paste-down and an additional bookplate for 'Peter M. Scott' to the rear paste-down. A-Y16, 601 numbered paragraphs. Rebound in half calf. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Some marks to the boards. Hinges strained but firm. Bookplates to the paste-downs and to the front free endpaper. Offsetting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Small amount of loss to the upper and lower front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise bright and clear. The odd spot throughout, heavier towards the front of the book. Library stamp to the front free endpaper, beneath the bookplate. Library stamps also to the title page, dedication page, preface and to the first page of text. Closed tear to page H9, and slight loss to the edge of page H8, though this does not affect the text. Very Good
