Folio, library rebound in half leather with brown cloth boards and gilt tiles on spine. 553 pp. illustrated with 2 engraved frontispieces. Title page in red and black. Edges red. Several pages are mis-numbered as with other copies; the text is complete and continuous. Minor old insect damage to the top corners at the front and a couple of small professional repairs. Generally the inner book is clean and in excellent condition for a book of this age. This copy is made more interesting by a critique of Hooker written on the front free endpaper, which is undated, circa 1800s. Ex reference library with minimal markings, pictorial bookplate on front pastedown, former library name in gilt on front cover and feint number on reverse of title page. Printed for R.C. S.S. Signs of wear, rubbing at edges and on hinges, tearing at edges of spine and a little one boards. Some slackness to binding but contents reasonably firm. Page edges browned, scuffed and a bit marked, upper and fore-edges neatly cut. Some marking to endpapers, inscription on front free endpaper. Some lines in margins and the odd note.
