About This Item

London: J. Tonson, 1730. William Congreve (1670-1729) grew up in Ireland, attended Trinity College Dublin, and was a friend of Dean Swift. Despite his Irish origins he was the master of English Restoration drama. Originally published by Jacob Tonson in 1710 as the first collection of Congreve's works and going to many editions over most of the 18th century. This is a Very Good copy of Tonson's 5th Edition, but "Volume the First" only, lacking the other two. Uncommon. Contains the comedies "The Old Batchelor" and "The Double Dealer." Clean text; 274 pages, very bright and clear, with four pages of ads by the printer in the rear. Full-leather binding; five raised bands and a red label on the spine. The leather is worn and chipped; gilt ruling is mostly rubbed off. The gutters are internally cracked, but holding well. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Fifth Edition.. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket.
