About This Item

Kyoto: Benrido, 1968. A catalogue for a traveling exhibition organized by the International Exhibitions Foundation - November 1968 / November 1969. 68 plates (3 in color). Tomioka Tessai (1837 - 1924) was the pseudonym for a painter and calligrapher in imperial Japan. He is regarded as the last major artist in the Bunjinga tradition and one of the first major artists of the Nihonga style. His real name was Yusuke, which he later changed to Hyakuren. The exposition shows masterworks of this noted Japanese artist, who sought neither glory nor reputation, seeking only to express his philosophy of life. His art is a continuation of the free style of the scholar literati painters of China and the Nanga artists of Japan. Ca. 140 unnumbered pages.. 1st edition. Paperback. Good copy/Cover in color. 24,5cmx18,5cm.
