About This Item

Kunming 1945. A hand-written 4-page letter and envelope, to Mr. Stan Wells, Nashville, Tennessee, dated Sept. 24, 1945, with his black & white photograph enclosed, very clean, an excellent example. RARE ORIGINAL PERIOD LETTER . *** **** *** . . AN ORIGINAL WORLD WAR II LETTER FROM KUNMING, CHINA . . . WRITTEN BY A "FLYING TIGER" MAJOR & ORDNANCE OFFICER . . * Major J.W. "Rudy" Luck, serial number O-426047 sends a letter from Kunming, China to his close friend's father in Nashville. . He politely asks Mr. Stan M. Wells to "Please do not do all the reunion celebration until I get back, save a little of the celebrations for me." Promising to be "Home for Christmas." . Obviously Mr. Well's children are serving in the war at different places. Since the Pacific war ended September 2, 1945, U.S. armed forces are preparing to head home and have "reunions" with family and friends. . Rudy also mentions that he will send or bring Mr. Wells some Chinese postage stamps as requested. . Rudy discusses his recent promotion to Major. . He continues with: . "I'm leaving Kunming on a three-thousand mile trip, around here in China, day after tomorrow. I will see a lot of China that I haven't seen before. Part of the trip will be by air and most by road. Some of the places I have to go to do not have an airport...I'm going to see how our Ordnance units ar doing concerning the turning in of their property and equipment prior to their leaving China. We sure have a lot of stuff over here to be disposed of. The Chinese are really going to be doing all right. I have a lot to tell you about the Chinese when I get home." . *** THE PHOTOGRAPH: The Major encloses a year-old photo of himself, with caption on the back: "RUDY Kunming May 3, 1944, at that time he was a First Lieutenant. . *** THE POST MARK: The letter was sent free, which is written by the sender in the upper right corner, with a "U.S. ARMY POSTAL SERVICE A.P.O. 488, plus the date stamp. . * See photos posted to our website. . * .
