Issued during a period of renewed interest in small-press horror publishing, this edition reflects Subterranean Press’s role in shaping the collectible market for contemporary dark fiction. Provenance from D. Douglas Fratz places the volume within a documented network of genre writers, reviewers, and editors.

The collection comprises three stories:
+++ 'The Crystal Empire' by Poppy Z. Brite: Set in a decaying urban environment, this tale follows Zee, a woman entangled in a manipulative relationship with Mathew. Their lives are disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious musician, Anthony LaGuerre, whose haunting voice brings both allure and destruction.
+++ 'Onion' by Caitlín R. Kiernan: This story centers on Frank and Willa, two individuals grappling with the aftermath of a supernatural event that has left them emotionally and mentally scarred. Their journey reflects themes of existential dread and the search for meaning in a changed world.
+++ 'The Rest of the Wrong Thing' by Poppy Z. Brite and Caitlín R. Kiernan: A collaborative piece set in Brite's fictional town of Missing Mile, North Carolina. The narrative follows three characters exploring a haunted mill, uncovering entities that challenge their perceptions of reality.

The collection is noted for its atmospheric storytelling and exploration of the uncanny. Kiernan's "Onion" received the 2001 International Horror Guild Award for Best Short Story, highlighting the collection's critical acclaim.
