Light shelf-wear; some foxing to fore-edge of text block. Brief gift inscription in pencil on front free endpaper; soiled spots in margins on a few pages, else generally clean. Dust jacket chipped at spine ends and corners; some tearing on rear panel, tape repair on reverse; in an archival mylar sleeve. pp. 178, plus [8] ads. Scarce. A very early work by Benda. The Yoke of Pity was his first novel, short-listed for the Prix Goncourt in 1912, and here translated by the British novelist, previously J.M. Barrie's secretary, Gilbert Cannan.
