About This Item

Berkeley: University of California Press, 1948. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good. [11x7.25in]; xi, 104 pp., 9 illustrations , 25 entries with descriptions of multiple editions; Olive cloth covers with red ink backing and red lettering on front, gilt lettering on spine, dark orange end papers; Tan dust jacket with red backing and black lettering on spine and front, red illustration of surveyors on mountain ridge, advertisements on back; Minimal shelf wear to covers with rubbing to top and bottom of spine, some small chipping and closed tears alonge edges of dust jacket with age toning along edges. Francis Peloubet Farquhar (1887-1974) was a mountaineer, environmentalist, historian, author and certified public accountant. He was active in the Sierra Club from the early 1920's for the rest of his life. He was also active in the California Historical Society and the San Francisco based California Academy of Sciences. From the dust jacket, Farquhar as the "... principal historian of the nation's greatest mountain range, combines a mountaineer's ability to find a route up a cliff with a historian's ability to track down a fact. Further, he has assembled the most complete library on the mountain and other scenic regions of the Far West. From this he has selected 25 titles of major importance, either in their value as a source material or in their rarity, concerning Yosemite, the Big Trees, and the High Sierra. To these titles he has given a treatment that brings to a bibliography a rare -if not new - combination of accurate completeness and enjoyable element of liveliness.
