Carter grew up in a single-parent home in Flatwoods, Kentucky in the 1950s. A shy kid, he under-achieved his way through high school, but finally began his slow transformation into "becoming the person I wanted to be." David's first big success came in his late 20s, when he self-published his first book on logo design after being turned down by 17 publishers. He went on to become the best-selling producer of books for the graphic design world, with over 110 books with his name on the cover. For many years, he was top producer in the design division of HarperCollins. In addition, he founded an advertising agency in Ashland, Kentucky, which quickly was accepted into the AAAA, and went on to be honored by the Clio Awards 10 times. In the late 1980s, he became a global branding consultant, making 25 trips to Asia to work with large firms in emerging countries. He founded a TV production company and soon was producing documentaries which ran on PBS stations around the country. He and his producer, Richard Friley, produced more than a dozen comedy sketches for the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He won seven Emmy Awards in the process. And, he founded the Telly Awards, which is now one of the largest creative competitions in America. The book will be an inspiration to entrepreneurs in creative fields such as advertising, graphic design, TV and film making. And, students will find the book inspirational, as Carter writes incisive "what you can learn from this chapter" notes.
