The story begins in a French military establishment where the commanding officer's small children live very happily 'below stairs' in their father's chateau, with kind servants and soldiers who spoil them, teach them amusing bad language, and let them ride the great horse which carries the drums … Then something happens which decides the colonel, that he himself must supervise his children's education and their happiness ends …
Bemelmans (1898-1962) was a German American author and artist, best remembered today as the author of the Madeline series for children. He also wrote over 20 additional novels, some for children, some for adults, between 1934 and 1962. The sale volume concerns the daughter of a general in occupied Germany after the war; she has lived in both the prewar world and the aftermath of the war, a world gone mad.
