About This Item

Berkeley; (1976): University of California Press. First Edition. Octavo. 488pp., with a foreword by Theodora Kroeber and a biographical introduction by Timothy H.H. Thoresen, Folkloristic Commentary by Alan Dundes and Editor's preface by Grace Buzalkijko. Between 1901 and 1907 the author, then a young professor at the university of Berkely, made numerous trips into the country of the Yurok Indians, along the far northern California coast and inland on the lower Klamath River. Kroeber, concentrated on the culture of Yurok, sought material artifacts for the University Museum and collected Yurok myths, tales of woge times. He collected over 150 myths and variants, transcribing some in the original tongue, many on phonographic cylinders for later translation. He had dies near the end of his work. To mark Kroeber's birth, the complete collection is published here for the first time following Kroeber's plan. A near fine copy bound in wheat cloth, spine lettering brick, owner's name, in near fine dust jacket lettered in dark brown and brick. Very nice.
