The Gods of Guilt

by Michael Connelly

I usually only read books at bedtime. Rarely am I compelled to keep reading during the day, but with The Gods of Guilt the tension built to a crescendo and I couldn't wait another day to see how the court case resolved. There were several scenes when I was so caught off guard by the latest developments that I gasped out loud - with no one around to hear me and ask what happened. If you like court room drama and complex characters, you will enjoy the latest in the Lincoln Lawyer series. Anything else I say might spoil the surprise twists in the plot, which kept me riveted to each new page.

Mildly entertaining, a quick read. In the back of the edition I read, there was a whole appendix entitled "Questions for discussion". Really!? What was there to discuss? It's not as if this is Shelley's Frankenstein. Not that I have anything against the book, but I can't imagine anything more than a passing conversation: "Hey, have you read Water for Elephants?" "Yes, I have." "So what did you think?" "Um, it was pretty good."

Perhaps its just because I'm an unrepentant baseball fan (I'm also an unrepentant fan of alliteration and Philip Roth, too), but this, to me was my favorite Roth book.

Terrific book, but admittedly if you're neither a runner or an aspiring runner, some of the substance may be lost on you.

A brilliant story that will both inform and delight (and possibly inspire your own long-distance journey).
