About This Item

London: Henry Hills, 1686. Disbound. Fair. 7.5" by 6". None. A very scarce collection of two Catholic works preaching about Saint Peter the Apostle, written by the alomer the Mary of Modena, Thomas Godden, and William Clenche. An interesting work on Catholicism during religious turmoil in Britain. Two volumes in one. A very scarce work. 'A Sermon of St. Peter, Preach'd Before Her Majesty the Queen-Dowager, in Her Chappel at Somerset-House, on the Twenty Ninth of June, 1686. Being St. Peter and St. Paul's Day'. ESTC citation number R21804. This work is a quarto with the signatures running as A-E4, F1. A sermon on Saint Peter, or Peter the Apostle, the sermon spoken before the Catholic Queen Dowager Mary of Modena in 1686 on the 29th June. The 29th June is the day of Saints Peter and Paul. Written by Thomas Godden. Thomas Godden was a Catholic priest who, at the time of this sermon, was the almoner of the Queen Dowager Mary of Modena. He played a prominent part of the religious controversies in England, and died just a month after the Glorious Revolution. He spent the years of James II's reign circulating works of Catholic devotion, and replying to the works published that attacked the Catholic religion. Godden had been implicated fasley by Titus Oates in the Popish Plot, but escaped the country before he could be persecuted. Bound without the last blank, otherwise complete. 'St Peter's Supremacy Faithfully Discuss'd, According to Holy Scripture, and Greek and Latin Fathers. With a Detection and Consutation of the Errors of Protestant Writers on This Article. Together With a Succinct Handling of Several Other Considerable Points'. ESTC citation number R5309. A4, a-b4, B-Z4, Aa-Cc4, Dd2. Written by William Clenche. Very little is known about the life of William Clenche. Both of these works focus on Saint Peter. St Peter was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, and was the first leader of early Church, and ancient Christian suggests that he was the founder of the Church of Antioch and the Roman Church. According the tradition, Peter was crucified under the order of Emperor Nero in Rome. Roman Catholics believe that the Pope is Saint Peter's successor to the church, and so he is the rightful head of all bishops. Saint Peter was a martyr for his religion, and so was a prominent figurehead at a time when Catholics were persecuted in England. The Catholics of England during this era were oppressed by the Church of England, which was the standard Church at the time, and so it was a hard time for the Catholics. The Catholic Church believed that Peter was promised by Jesus to hold the first place of honour and authority However, at this time, Britain had a Catholic King ruling, James II, who was the last Roman Catholic monarch of England. His short reign as King of England is best remembered for his fighting for religious tolerance. In 1687 James II made the Declaration of Indulgence, which attempted to establish freedom of religion in Britain by suspending the penal laws of the Church of England. However, James was unsuccessful, and was pushed off the throne in the 1688 Glorious Revolution. William Clenche's work looks at the schism of the churches, and discusses which church may be responsible for it, as well as looking at and discussing the respect of images, communion, and public prayers in Latin, before discussing Saint Peter. A very scarce collection of two works looking at Saint Peter during the reign of the Catholic King James II. Disbound with the backstrip still attached. Externally, the outer wraps are bright with some handling marks. Some spots to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with scattered spots. Dampstains to the tail of some pages, mostly to the pages of 'A Sermon of St. Peter'. Title page of 'A Sermon of St. Peter' is heavily age-toned. Ink mark to the title page of 'St Peter's Supremacy Faithfully Discuss'd'. Fair
