About This Item

Philadelphia; 1869-1871: F.W. Thomas & Sohne. Small Octavos. German text. August Wilhelm von Schlegal's translation was completed by Wolf Graf von Baudissin and Orothea Tieck with the notes by Tieck. The key reference is Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, Volume 38, p. 271. So many Americans had come from Germany that F.W. Thomas began publishing classics in German in the 1840's. This was his biggest task and took the better part of three years to complete. This edition is at the Folger and Harvard. Bound in 3/4 brown pebble grained morocco over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, lettering and rules gilt, yellow endpapers, some toning to pages, bindings rubbed, volume 7 has its upper corners quite worn. A very good set.
