About This Item
Weimar: Verlag des Gesellschaft, 1773. Etching. Measures 3" x 5". Trimmed to neat line.

Beautiful portrait of Juliana Morell shown bust length, looking to the right, wearing a headscarf and cape with a pearl brooch. Juliana Morell (1594-1653) was a Catalan child prodigy, Dominican nun, and intellectual. While the details of her studies remain unconfirmed, she is considered by many to be the first woman to obtain a university degree, defending a thesis on ethics and dialetics at the age of 12, and shortly after receiving her doctorate in canon law.
