New York: Hyperion, 1941. First edition. Hardcover. Orig. white board front cover with multicolored illustration and tan cloth spine with white printed paper label. Near fine. 46.5 x 36 cm. Limited edition, copy 460 of 1000. Six page introduction by Saroyan. Iconic study of Harlem life and culture, twenty four original lithographs, most in color. His ability to capture a perfect likeness using a minimum number of lines, a hallmark of his style and success. Al Hirschfeld's iconic depiction of 1930s Harlem. Permanent collections of Hirschfeld's work can be found at a variety of institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the New York Public Library in New York, Harvard University in Cambridge, and the Harry Ransom Center Austin, Texas. Front cover has miniscule spots to the right of yellow cane, tiny bump lower front cover. Lacks slipcase.
