About This Item
New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1959. Complete in 3 volumes. As the author explains in chapter one, "The area which specifically forms the basis of the present study comprises the Counties of Elizabeth City, Warwick, Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Norfolk, Princess Anne and Southampton, and the cities which were formed from territories originally part of those counties." So also included is the pre-1959 history of the cities formed since that year: Hampton, Newport News, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk. Rogers Dey Whichard (1902-1994) earned a PhD from the University of North Carolina and taught at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary (now Old Dominion University) for 25 years. ODU's Perry Library Special Collections and Archives hold approximately 100 printing plates that were used to print the pictures in The History of Lower Tidewater Virginia. All three volumes are in very good condition: clean and tight; clean, bright pages, with only an occasional spot of foxing; photos and photogravures are in excellent condition.. First Edition. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
