First edition. 12mo. 66 pp. Original stiff brown printed wraps (front wrapper nearly detached, rear wrapper starting, some chipping to edges), spine partly perished. Previous owner's small bookplate and signature on title page. The only edition, and an unusual subject for the famed British essayist, who uses the publication of Grant's "Personal Memoirs" as an occasion to highlight American and British cultural differences, noting that the Memoirs sold very poorly in England.

Boston: Cupples, Upham & Co., 1887. First Edition . Hardcover. Fine. Near fine bound in blue cloth-covered boards with a handwritten paper label. The original brown paper wrappers are bound in. S.H. Hubbard's copy with his ownership signature and a later handwritten line, "Yale University Library." It is possible that this was once an institutional copy with a clear indication of a removed label from the front pastedown of the later cloth binding. There are no other indications on the wrappers or the internal text.

Pages show a thin strip of light damp stain at the bottom edge only (less than 1/4 inch - text is not affected) else Very Good condition. No owner's name or bookplate. No underlining.
