Octavo, twelve volumes, each approximately 700 pages with numerous maps plus plates. Maroon cloth; Volume 4 has light uneven loss of colour to portion of the rear cover; Volume 6 is a little bumped and lightly marked, with the rear endpaper indifferently pasted in (as issued); Volumes 7, 8, 10 and 11 are variously sunned, marked and flecked; minor signs of age and use, but overall a very presentable set (internally excellent). The Australian Government accepted Charles Bean's 1919 recommendations for 'the official history and for a national war memorial which "for all time" would "hold the sacred memories of the AIF".... Bean himself wrote six…

Description:
Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1941. Twelve volumes, large octavos in original maroon cloth with gilt lettering, maps, plates and charts throughout. Occasional light external wear and a touch of flecking, but a most handsome near-fine set with solid and consistent cloth colouration. The last and final volume, being the photographic record of the war, is well preserved. A set of mixed editions dated between 1935 and 1941, when the original publication was re-issued by Angus & Robertson in large numbers at the outset of the Second World War. Charles Bean's history of the Australian army remains a benchmark of military historiography, supplemented here in the full set with the respective volumes on the Royal Australian Navy by Jose and the Australian Flying Corps by Cutlack.
