Forster Alexander Sondley, attorney and scholar, was born at Montrealla, his maternal grandfather's home in Alexander, a community ten miles north of Asheville. As an adult he most often referred to himself as F. A. Sondley. A lawyer, historian, and collector of art, he is chiefly remembered for his personal library of approximately 30,000 volumes containing hundreds of rare works on southern and state history and natural history. The city of Asheville acquired the library by bequest at his death, and parts of it still form the nucleus of the Sondley Reference Library in Asheville.

The spine is tattered on both from the top and bottom edges with a one inch tear along the top and bottom sides of the hinges. Spine is bumped and is shaken, but binding is secure. Binding is visible on the front and back end page leaves. The inside of the back cover is chipped. Pages are yellowed, but otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. As is.

In a half calf binding. Externally slightly rubbed, with wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine and extremities resulting in slight loss to the leather.
