Contains 30 out of 34 expected hand-coloured plates. pp161-2 are missing. Some occasional heavy cracking to gutters throughout, causing binding to be loose. Some sections are held by a few binding threads. Pages 175 and 337 are detached but present. A few pages and plates missing. Page 19 is creased. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Card panels have mild rubbing with minor pencil mark to front cover. Spine cloth worn at the joints. Gilt lettering is darkened. Cloth is slightly slack on rear board.

Original brown cloth covers - original green endpapers split at front with rear one intact. Gold embossed spine. Original brown cloth covers - boards and spine detached from pages. two 1/2" splits to top of spine. and a two inch split between spine and back board at top. The plates are bound in at the rear of this volume. Plates sell for up to $75 each. Some foxing on initial pages and some to cover pages to plates but little else seen. Some pages still unsplit at tops. Sir William Jardine Baronet was a 19th Century Scottish naturalist. After originally studied medicine in Edinburgh and Paris he was captivated by the natural sciences. He founded the Magazine of Zoology and Botany in 1837. EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1842 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding, with 34 hand coloured plates. With volume listing; frontispiece portrait of Rev Dr Walker; hand coloured vignette title page showing a spaniel and a heron; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Dr Walker; and text with black and white illustrations and 34 hand coloured plates bound at the rear. The binding has been rebacked, relaying the original spine, and the end papers repaired and retained. The binding has fading to spine and board edges and light wear to corners. The end papers have some marking at the joints where repaired. The text pages are generally clean with light toning and occasional marking and spotting, mainly at the edges. All the plates are tissue-guarded and are very well coloured. There is some offsetting to the guards and the occasional nibble to the guard edge. There is an old crease to plate 29 and its tissue guard, not affecting the image.
