Oval, coloured image of sundial to front cover within double gilt borders. no dustwrapper. 8.5ins x 6ins, endpapers as plans of garden, viii, 224pp plus frontis and 21pp photographic plates. Ansell was the wife of Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie. Previous owners name and date to top of half title. Scattered light foxing. Front hinge cracked. One inch closed tear to cloth at base of front cover. Actually a better copy than this list of faults suggests! G+

Gilt- and colour-pictorial cloth lettered and ruled in gilt; cloth lightly flecked; front board slightly bowed, with the cloth in the top corner very slightly affected by damp (and noticeable only in a raking light); small tidemark to the top corner-tip of the first two plates; leading edge slightly marked; a very good copy. 'Mary Ansell (1868-1950) published three books in her lifetime: "The Happy Garden" and "Happy Houses", both in 1912; and "Dogs and Men" in 1924. The former two were written three years after she had left her writer-husband, J.M. Barrie, for Gilbert Cannan, an up-and-coming novelist fifteen years her junior.
