Original blue cloth, gilt titling to the front board and the spine. The binding is a little rubbed and bumped, the endpapers are tanned, there is a bookplate to the front pastedown, the verso of the frontispiece is spotted, and a couple of the tissue protectors are chipped. Overall, this book is in good plus condition. Part of the A&C Black series of colour books, and one of the rarest of the lot, as only 1000 copies were printed. Inman 657.

This volume is unusual in that this was the first time such illustrations had appeared as chapter headings on the same page as the text matter. A laborious process, in that the paper had to first be coated (as the three colour process was only successful on art paper), the experiment was not repeated. Parchment a tad thumbed but overall the book is in excellent condition and tightly bound. Mortimer Menpes (1855 - 1938) was an Australian-born painter, author, printmaker and illustrator who traveled widely and lived in England since his 20s.
