Handsomely rebound in half calf, top edge gilt.

London: Navarre Society Ltd., no-date [1921]. First thus. Two volumes with nearly 100 illustrations by Robinson including the two frontis pieces. Originally published by Grant Richards in 1904 in a quarto edition, privately reprinted for the Navarre Society in this reduced (octavo) format. Geoffrey Beale (Book Collector No. 40) notes: "To those who think of him as a gentle humorist, perhaps the most surprising of Heath Robinson's books is the edition of Rabelais....To the unprepared reader, finding here visions of hell that are truly horrific, and a raw power and earthiness that is exactly in tune with Rabelais' narrative style, might well ask whether this is the work of the same artist." Shimmering blue cloth (Blanck's AA) boards with gold stamped lettering, design and rule; page top edges gilt. Spines toned (gilt still quite bright), light unavoidable offset to endpapers, small stain and tiny hole in rear blank volume I which has also shows rear hinge repair. Still, an altogether attractive set.

Signature on front free endpaper, endpapers lightly toned, a little foxing to the final pages of volume two, a good set. § Third Heath Robinson edition. The works of Rabelais illustrated by William Heath Robinson were commissioned by Grant Richards and first published as two large quarto volumes in 1904. Heath Robinson "chose a grotesque style which emphasized the earthiness of the epic while overlooking the bawdy" (ODNB).

Containing five books of the lives, heroick deeds & sayings of Gargantua and his sonne Pantagruel, together with the Pantagrueline Prognostication, the Oracle of the Divine Bacbuc, and response of the bottle. Hereunto are annexed the Navigations unto the Sounding Isle and the Isle of the Apefts: as likewise the Philosophical cream with a Limosin epistle all done by Mr. Francis Rabelais in the French tongue and now faithfully translated into English. xlii, 377; xxviii, 350 pages. Pages heavily foxed and tanned, as often. White cloth soiled; spines tanned. A decent, but not great, set.

TEG, fore-edge untrimmed. White blindstamped buckram with gilt lettering and decoration. Spines slightly darkened, as usual, and some soiling to cloth. Corners bumped. Else, a crisp set. For centuries prudes have identified Rableais's work as containing many unseemly characteristics: licentiousness, grotesqueries, coarse and ribald satire, etc. In short, the qualities one looks for in entertaining literature. This set comprises a great partnership: Rabelais's delightfully vulgar tales are complemented by Robinson's witty and developed eye.

A bit of light cover soiling; with an art nouveau design of a vine climbing a tree on the front cover and spine. Spine of Vol. I faded.

Each volume with various engraved illustrations, title pages printed in two colours. Each set strictly limited and printed on fine laid paper. Publisher's cream buckram with gilt titles to spines and gilt decoration to boards. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. All volumes with the uniform plain grey dust-jacket, priced to spine. Some expected off-setting and spotting to text, some bindings with cloth spotted, a few minor tears to jackets but in essence a fine, fresh collection which has survived remarkably well. Housed in two bespoke black cloth slip-cases with double ribbon pulls. A charming presentation of these illustrated literary classics.
