Laid in is an index card written on one side in a child's hand: "Dear Mr. President, Please write in this for Mama and Daddy. Thank you. Jane Lingo." Also laid in is a piece of White House stationery with a typed note to have books delivered to Miss Jane Lingo.

McCormack with/kindest regards for their good friend./White House,/Harry Truman/Dec. 17, 1952." McCormack was a Democratic member from Massachusetts of the United States Congress from 1928 to 1971, serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives under Kennedy and Johnson from 1963 to 1971. Only Tip O'Neill served a longer continuous term as Speaker (10 years).

His reputation was of a no-nonsense, poker-faced man who knew how to get things done. He was convicted in 1956 for accepting a bribe and eventually served six months in federal prison.
