Spine does show some detachment from text block but still sturdy with pages that are smooth and sewn in still and are clean and bright. Filled with color and b/w illustrations. Original blue boards. Scuffing on boards and to head and tail of spine along with toning to pages. Please see our photographs for details. A still fantastic copy of this unique edition.

Marvelously Illustrated throughout with high art deco, colour and monochrome plates drawings vignettes and decorations by Pogany. Widely regarded as the quintessential example of high art deco illustration, Pogany's mother goose has delighted collectors of this genre for many years. Copies of the first edition have grown exceediungly scarce, particularly in this condition. A true delight of art deco extravagance. Head and tailpiece a bit rubbed with tailpiece a bit frayed. Short tear to ffep and half title, else a Near Fine crisp copy.

Solid and VG in its 1/4 navy-blue cloth over light-blue boards, with a clean, bright title-label to the front panel. Light scuffing to the panels, light wear along the tips and the spine ends --and a partially-torn spine label. Internally, beautifully-designed endpapers and magnificent Pogany color illustrations (as well as silhouettes) and marginalia at virtually every page. Very light soiling and several minor chips (not affecting the plates) at a few of the lower-edges, tender (but still perfectly sturdy) inner hinges, half-title/frontispiece page loose. Octavo, beautiful late '20s illustrations, in a number of cases with a strong Deco feel.

Hungarian illustrator Willy Pogany (1882-1955), a contemporary of monumental illustrators such as Edmund Dulac and N. C. Wyeth, was strongly influenced by botanical designs and the Art Nouveau movement; Pogany illustrated numerous fairy tales and children's stories, demonstrating a fine attention to detail and line work. The "Mother Goose" stories have delighted children for centuries, making their first appearance as early as 1697 in "Stories or Tales of Times Past". The frontis for this volumes depicted an old woman spinning next to a fireplace and telling stories to young children.
