Vanguard Press, New York, 1938 First Edition, First Printing SIGNED by Dr. Seuss on a laid in signature. This ORIGINAL dustjacket has the First Issue points with the publisher's $1.50 printed price present on the front flap and Mulberry priced $1.00 at rear flap. Later editions are either price clipped or have the price of Mulberry changed to $1.25 on the back flap. The book is in great shape and is bound in the publisher's cloth. The binding is tight with NO cocking or leaning and the boards are crisp with minor wear to the edges. The pages are clean with NO writing, marks or bookplates in the book. A wonderful copy of this TRUE FIRST EDITION, with the correct endpapers going from larger to smaller hats with the largest hats on the paste downs.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. A very good first edition first issue (with hats correct on endpapers) in a very good first issue dust jacket (correct prices on flaps). This is the copy that was used by Helen Younger for her Seuss First Edition Guide, and was purchased by us at the Waverly Auction where she and her partner sold the books they used for the Guide. Comes with the numbered bookmark from Waverly. Housed in a custom-made collector's clamshell case with a leather label on the spine lettered in gilt.

This copy is SIGNED by the author on the verso of the front free end paper. Book very good, previous owner's name penciled on top of inside cover. 1st page has a 1 1/2 " tear at bottom, some small red discoloration from binding behind paper on front and rear inside covers near top and bottom towards hinge. No DJ. Book comes in specially made cloth slipcase. We will provide a certificate of authenticity for this item.

Dust jacket with a couple of 1/2" chips and a closed tear, but very good. Internally clean and bright, with no markings of any kind.

Contains in the rear a small sticker from the John Foles bookstore in La Jolla which was often visited by Seuss, who lived nearby.

VG- (with light scuffing and rubbing to the panels and light soiling to the text) in a bright, price-intact ("$2.95"), VG dustjacket, with light chipping at the front panel's lower corner (not affecting the text), light chipping at the spine ends and very light creasing to the panels. Quarto, wondefully illustrated thruout by the good Doctor.

Hats grow larger as they cross the front end sheet left to right and opposite way on rear end sheets. Price-clipped jacket has spine chips and tears -- one large one on front that was tape repiared..
