Red leather with detailed gilt arabesques to both boards. Five compartment spine with gilt titles. Top edge gilt. Seven illustrations (including frontispiece) with tissue guards. Decorated initials to chapters. Contributors to this edition include: Frederick Greenwood, W. H. Mallock, Wilfrid Meynell, Edmund Gosse, George Bernard Shaw, Winston S. Churchill etc Book in very good condition. Corners and edges a little rubbed. Some rubbing and wear to extremities of spine, which is also beginning to crack at the upper and lower areas of its hinges. Virtually free of spotting though there is some toning to endpapers. Six illustrations (including frontispiece) with tissue guards. Decorated initials to chapters. London: J. and R. Tonson. Hardback. Fair/No dust jacket.. Leather bound volume. Title page states 'Printed for J. and R. Tonson in the Strand. MDCCLXV' otherwise undated. Book in fair condition. Binding sound but leather cracking at hinges. Boards a little scuffed. Corners bumped. Ink inscription on front paste down and ffep with date 1810. The ffep is worn and has some loss. Verso of ffep has lengthy hand written text in what appears to be the same hand as the inscription on recto. Engraving on frontispiece. Both frontispiece and title page have some loss to bottom corner. Verso of title page has a column of hand written accounts. An interesting volume.
