Eliot, from his notebook that surfaced only after his death. First Harvest Book edition. Edited by Christopher Ricks with 42 pages of prefatory material and nearly 300 pages of notes, including on unfinished poems. Illustrated with facsimiles of two ms. pages. Trade paperback, scant shelf wear, very faint foxing to edges, pages are unmarked but yellowed around the margins.

Jan. 1936 note by TSE describes this as a "second edition," compared with the version in which the play was produced at the Canterbury Festival in June 1935. 8vo, black cloth with faded gilt lettering on spine, minimal shelf wear with sharp corners, isolated dust stains on a few pages, in aged-toned DJ with small losses at crown, other light shelf wear, old price sticker on front panel, all flaps appear clipped but decoratively - $2.25 price on front flap is not clipped. A former owner's name sticker affixed to ffep, underscoring in pencil observed in two places.

Mass-market paperback, wraps worn with 1" chip at bottom and 1/2" at top of spine, which has been reglued and reinforced with tape (leaving front cover not quite flush with fore-edge), diagonal crease across front, foxing to inside covers and many pages, mostly appearing as light smudges around the margins. Underscoring and/or marginalia in pencil on approximately 30 pages including end papers.

Subtitled on the cover, "Eight Essays on Literature and Education," the posthumously published book assembles previously uncollected essays and lectures. Besides the title lecture, it includes The Aims of Education (1950) and pieces on Ezra Pound, Dante, the classics, and American literature and language. Trade paperback, wraps soiled, spine creased and torn, light foxing to edges. The description as "fair" refers to the binding, which has been repaired at different times with both tape and glue; all pages are present, some are loose or a little damaged along binding, and text block is in two not entirely even blocks. The interior pages are bright and for the most part clean, with only a few marks. Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff written on ffep, his marginalia on approximately five pages in the 1953 lecture "American Literature and the American Language.
