Description:
First and only edition.
On May 25, 1928, the airship Nobile crashed on the Arctic Ocean ice, marking one of the greatest tragedies in aviation history and triggering the first major international search and rescue operation. Responding to the distress call, the Soviet Union, with its excellent resources, dispatched three Arctic icebreakers: the Malygin, the Sedov, and the Krasin. The Krasin was under the command of Professor Rudolf Samoylovich, an Arctic explorer and a personal friend of Nobile. Despite facing propeller failure, the Soviet icebreaker Krasin managed to successfully rescue the majority of the stranded travelers on July 12.This book about the operation was written by the female journalist of newspaper "Trud" (Labor) Liubov Vorontsova (1900-1972). Due to logistical constraints, she earned her place by working as a stoker and assistant radio operator. It's important to note that there were only two women on the Krasin: Vorontsova and Kseniia Aleksandrovich, who worked as a cabin cleaner… Read More

One of 5 000 copies published. First and only Russian edition.
Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897 ended in tragedy, claiming the lives of all three expedition members: S. A. Andrée, Knut Frænkel, and Nils Strindberg. Andrée, the first Swedish balloonist, proposed an audacious journey by hydrogen balloon from Svalbard to either Russia or Canada, with the ambitious aim of passing directly over the North Pole. This plan received enthusiastic support in Sweden, a northern nation keen to assert its presence in the race to reach the North Pole.In July 1897, Andrée, Strindberg, and Frænkel set out on their expedition from Svalbard. Unfortunately, the balloon quickly lost hydrogen and crashed onto the ice after just two days. Although the explorers survived the crash unharmed, they faced a grueling journey southward across the treacherous drifting ice. Ill-prepared and lacking adequate clothing and equipment, they struggled to navigate the challenging terrain and ultimately succumbed to the… Read More
