This copy was signed by a "technical editor" (Soviet term for a proofreader) A. Tcyppo. According to proofreader's stamps, it is dated on March 23rd and the book of poems was signed for print on April 5th, 1936.
Robert Burns (1759–1796) is widely regarded as one of the most renowned foreign poets in Russia. His poems have been republished numerous times and have sold millions of copies. In addition, Russian versions of his songs can be heard in popular films, on television, and on the radio. The first Russian translations of Burns' poems were published at the beginning of the 19th century and had an influence on Alexander Pushkin, Russia's greatest poet. Pushkin even had a copy of The Poetical Works of Robert Burns (2 vol., 1829) in his personal library.

One of 10 000 copies printed.First Russian edition of The Citadel. Third Cronin's book in Russian.
Cronin was one of the few contemporary British novelists to be published in the USSR. His social-problem novels and especially The Citadel (1937) were most widely read as examples of both technical modernization and social criticism. 'To some extent, of course, the Citadel was simply useful anti-British propaganda: Britain's medical system as described by Cronin is the product of a decaying political and social system' (McKibbin R. Democracy and Political Culture: Studies in Modern British History. Oxford University press, 2019). That's why the Soviet medical circles were impressed by the novel.The first three Cronin's books in Russian were translated by Mariya Abkina (1892-?), who was a part of 'the Soviet school' of literary translation headed by Ivan Kashkin. In 1941 her translation of The Citadel was republished, which was quite rare for foreign books in the USSR.

Moskva, Tip. Avgusta Semena, 1827.The one and only edition of the poem The Lord of the Isles by Walter Scott (1771-1832) in Russian. Translated as prose. The original poem was published in 1815. This poem is about the national hero of Scotland Robert the Bruce. He headed the First War of Scottish Independence against England and was a King of Scots from 1306 till 1329. In the poem he was into an exile and sought an asylum with Ronald, Lord of the Isles. Robert appeared on the day of the wedding feast and the party broke up. The guests divided into two camps : one ready to raise him to the Scottish crown and others ready to kill him. This edition was printed in one of the best printing house in Moscow. Owner of printing house was a Frenchman, publisher and typographer Avgust Semen.Very rare.Levidova, #249.We couldn't trace any copy of the edition in USA, two copies are in Europe, in Cambridge University Library and in Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome.
