First Edition. 202 pages printed on coated stock, (56 pages of text, each section headed by a black and white thumbnail portrait of the artist being discussed, 74 leaves of black and white plates representing the subject artist's work, frontis is in color) good condition (tan hardback cloth binding with mild toning; slight shelf wear to head and tail of spine, and corners, old pencil mark in upper margin of one page - all not affecting contents).

From the introduction: "Here we are merely publishing biographical and critical notes of practically all of the important artists who have helped to make the movement (modern Mexican art) and some of the younger ones of promise, with reproductions of their work. Four leaves, (including half title), 67 pages, ten full page engraved plates by W. B. Cooke, George Cooke, Henry Moses, and Cosmo Armstrong on separate leaves (including the frontis, "Drawn by J. M. W. Turner R. A."), 4 engraved vignette illustrations in the text, quarter leather binding, with matching leather corners, marbled boards, title in gilt on spine (insignificant shelf wear to edges of binding, and mild foxing in margins of the plates; none of these affecting contents).
In a second section of the book are "Remarks On the Ancient and Modern History of Istria and Dalmatia, Elucidatory of the Origin, Manners, and Customs of the Present Inhabitants."
Pola is a city on the Adriatic, on the Istria Peninsula. At one time it was part of Italy, but now is in Croatia.

Colt volume has 422 pages, and the Winchester volume has 402 pages; both are printed on coated stock, and profusely illustrated with black and white and color photographs including several fold out plates. There is a General Index, and a Model Index in each book.

The Colt volume, published in 1974, is bound in blue leatherette, with the title in silver on the front cover over the rampant Colt trademark; the Winchester volume, published in 1975, is bound in red leatherette, with the title in silver over the Winchester horse and rider trademark. The leatherette boxed slip case has minor nicks at the edges, and a few scratches, neither affecting either volume - which are both clean and bright.

First Edition. 101 + (1) pages, almost 50 lithographic plates (more than 35 printed with color), quarter leather binding over cloth boards, front cover embossed with title, author, and publisher in gilt; back cover similarly embossed in gilt with "Ye Pipes of all Nations A. D. Up to Date," and gilt bust of a soldier in cap and tunic in the form of a pipe bowl. Very good condition, minimal wear to spine; age toning in margins of plates, but not affecting images or contents.

A beautiful book: "A collection of national smoking practices and illustrations of smoking paraphernalia," with descriptive text.
