A short historical introduction to the Port and its progress, a harbor engineer's report, information on fire protection, fishing, labor, trucking, industrial development, and the role of various railroads, the Pacific Electric, and aviation are among the many subjects covered.

First Edition. 79 page stapled booklet printed on pulp paper, bound in wrappers, illustrated by the American painter and illustrator B. G. Seielstad, good condition (minor old tape repairs to two portions of covers, neat rubber stamps with name of previous owner on front and back cover, and at top and bottom of title page (the one at the top is for the "Bush Orchestra") Published by the famous Los Angeles Hearst newspaper.

The fictional Blinkey Ben dispenses his folksy, small town, suggestive observations to the "Sporting Editor," and the "Night Editor" while using local scenery, and a few local celebrities to philosophize about the good old days.

"New and Revised" early edition, very good condition, stapled wrappers, 131 pages, plus 13 pages of publisher's advertisements (that include: "Official Basket Ball Guide, Rules For 1908," "Poker, How to Win," "Barbers' Book of Recipes," and others).

The many black and white photo illustrations include boxers posing in various stances (James Corbett, James Jeffries, John L. Sullivan, and Jack Johnson among them), boxers demonstrating a variety of punches (both offensive and defensive), along with boxing styles; there are also photographs of women in period skirts demonstrating "Bag Punching."

Covers printed in three colors. "The Recognized Authority on Boxing." An interesting, and rare pugilistic manual, protected by mylar.

Buff-colored wrappers, front cover oval cutout surrounded by the title and line drawings of the gardens; through the cutout oval, part of the first colored illustration under the cover is visible.

An early juvenile, in remarkably good condition, published in the Confederacy; where resources were scarce. Octavo (9 X 6 inches) San Diego, California: Liberton & Taylor, 1888. First Edition. 218 pages, illustrated with photographs and engravings, presentation inscription from W. L. Prouty who, according to the Directory of San Diego City and County for 1893-94, was the Superintendent of Streets. Good condition, original limp cloth showing wear and light stains from handling.The date and title are written discreetly on the spine.

Van Dyke was a prominent journalist who wrote several books that reflect the history of the San Diego region. In this book he states, "I have been asked to sketch the history, topography, resources and progress of the city and county of San Diego, up to date." He includes agriculture, climate, outdoor amusements, and biographies in his descriptions.

Original First Edition. 16 page sewn paper pamphlet in wrappers, minor discoloration to edges of covers, old $2 price, and old library call numbers written in pencil on top of front cover, old 15 cent price, and calculation figures not related to text written in pencil on back cover, contents clean and unaffected.

In this pamphlet, Judge Leavitt states his reasons (based on historical fact and the Constitution) for his ruling that denied a writ of habeas corpus for the defendant C. L. Vallandigham; leader of the "Peace Democrats," and Supreme Commander of the "Sons of Liberty."

The accused was charged with "mischievous disloyalty" in his opinions and statements; and subsequently arrested at the orders of General Burnside. Lincoln became involved when, in May of 1863, he wrote to Stanton stating that suspension of habeas corpus, as Stanton wanted, would not be necessary in this case.

The area was originally referred to as Garvanza. Located near the Arroyo Seco, the area encompasses York Valley, Herman, parts of Highland Park, and the San Raphael Hills. It is now the site of Occidental College, the home of Charles Lummis, and the old Southwest Museum.

Good condition (some pages have old smudges, or evidence of moisture in the margins, not affecting contents).

"The Fremont Hotel, just completed, is located on the corner of Fourth and Olive streets, Los Angeles, California."

The crest of the hotel, which is also on the cover, was designed by Jessie Benton Fremont. There is also a historical account of Fremont, his exploits, and his family in relation to their contribution and importance to California.
