Freedom Press, London, 1970; 140 x 214mm, pp 32; paper wrappers; staples rather rusted but otherwise a very good copy The cover story is a 10pp feature by Vivian Harper "Bertrand Russell and the anarchists". This draws on earlier material, including on an unsigned review in Anarchy in 1918 of Russell's book "Roads to Freedom", on his trenchant criticisms of the state socialism which had developed in Russia post-1917 and on his activities against war in general and in support of unilateral disarmament in the 1960s. Harper concludes that although Russell was not an anarchist he clearly had a leaning towards that philosophy (as he had himself acknowledged in his writing) ending by writing "For generations he has been a liberating influence". Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong, 1969; 4to, 220x278mm, pp xix, 143; red cloth, some water splashes on the spine and around the edges of front and back covers but despite that in good condition; the title page and verso with credits is typeset while the text is entirely in typewriter format; loosely nserted is a 12pp report, Provisional Report of Activities, 1968-1970, dated March 1970 from the same source. The weekend symposium was organised by Dr Marjorie Topley as part of the Anthropology Development Programme of the Centre of Asian Studies, the centre existing to provide research assistance to scholars working in the field of anthropology and allied disciplines, and for other purposes.

Batsford, London, 1st edition, 1955; edited Gilbert McAllister; 8vo, pp 160; slight marking on the cover and the dust wrapper slightly torn head and foot but a very good copy. At a time of growing concern about the annihilation of humanity as a result of the growth in nuclear weapon capability the five articles and other material in the book address the question of containment and disarmament. Although written some sixty years ago present-day posturing among all relevant nations today suggest that the messages remain pertinent.

London: Little Brown, 1996. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Large 8vo, xxvii, 547; includes ten maps and ten diagrams or tables; very good copy in dust wrapper. The author is a journalist and lecturer who at the point of publication had specialised in Chinese affairs for over 40 years, including having lived and worked in China, and was well respected as a writer and commentator on the region. Even now China is not well known to the outside world and Wilson's book sets the superpower growth of China into useful economic and social context and considers what is happening in the country and in its relations with other countries.

Archibald Constable and Company, Edinburgh, and Cadell and Davies, London, 1816, volume II, second edition; 8vo, pp xv, 595 plus errata sheet; early quarter dark green cloth gilt, light green paper boards; covers somewhat rubbed, binding tight and firm; some scattered foxing but overall in good condition. Stewart's works titled "On the Philosophy of the Human Mind" appeared in three volumes widely separated in time, being published in 1792, 1814 and 1827, each thereby linked but complete individually. A student of Thomas Reid Stewart later became Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University and played a major part in developing the growing reputation of Scottish philosophy through Europe in the early 19th century.

No Binding. Good. 4pp publication, 225x278mm, being a single folded sheet; printed by Cunningham and Salmon, 110 [or 119] Fleet Street, London and published by W Strange, 21 Paternoster Row. Once folded to a quarter size and therefore both creased and marked along the folds; slightly frayed at the edges and somewhat dustmarked but in quite fair or better condition, particularly for such an ephemeral item. The paper mimics a standard journal of the time with four columns across carrying a wide range of apparent news, comment and reporting. However, every single item mocks or lampoons the episcopal church or sometimes the government; for instance the shipping news includes a sailing "For the Land of Humbug, Direct ... the tithed-bottomed vessel Rapacity ... has the greater part of her villainy on board, possesses excellent accommodation for Church Cormorants and Clerical Sharpers ... apply to ... the Agents, False Doctrine, Heresy, and Schism, No 1, Pompous-place, near the Mitre, Bishop's… Read More

Macmillan, London, 1966; B-format paperback, pp [x1], 265; covers a little dust marked and with a neat cancellation stamp on the inner back cover and a previous owner's signature on the inside front cover but generally a good copy. With twelve essays by philosophers including Flew, Strawson, G J Warnock, J O Urmson, Stephen Toulmin, D F Pears and others.

London, Printed in the Year 1704; 4to, pp [iv], 20, 160x210mm; disbound from some volume and with the first two leaves nearly separated from the remainder which is, however, complete although also loose in parts; somewhat browned and with dust and other soiling and some old marks of water staining; there are generous foredge, binding and foot margins but the top has been cut rather close in the last three leaves (pp 15 to 20). Shippen was a Tory MP and a Jacobite, acting as a link between the Scottish and English adherents. The poem is an anti-Whig polemic specifically targeting the powerful Whig bookseller Jacob Tonson. This is an interesting copy in that there are some 18 very early, perhaps contemporary, annotations in the margins identifying the various people and places mentioned pseudonymously in the poem.

This is a series of specialist essays, field-based country case studies by both ecoomists and engineers, being a study prepared for the International Labour Office within the framework of the World Employment Programme.

Membership booklet of The Heretics, 1912-1913, with a list of the society's meetings including a reference to "The Philosophy of Bergson", a lecture on March 11 by Bertrand Russell. 120x160mm, cover of pale blue laid thicker paper and 16pp of text, all variously deckle-edged and uncut. A little dust marked on the back cover but in very good condition. An interesting curiosity rather than anything particularly profound but of interest for the list of frequent meetings and of the honorary members. The Heretics was a Cambridge debating and discussion society attached, I believe, to Trinity.
