Berkeley & Jefferson Counties, Virginia (now West Virginia): not published, 1786 - 1842. Group of ten folio manuscript documents and one partially printed document completed in manuscript involving the real estate transactions of Charles & John Yates in the upper Shenandoah Valley. Approximately 29 pp. in total, all docketed.
Each exhibits expected wear including original folds with associated splits and separations (one document with a small area of archival tissue repair), creasing, tears, small losses (occasionally briefly affecting text), soiling, toning and foxing.
Charles Yates (1728 - 1809) emigrated from England in 1748, first to New York and then, in 1752, to Fredericksburg, Virginia. A prosperous merchant and importer, he was also deeply involved in real estate speculation in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties (now West Virginia). Soiled, foxed & spotted, modest edge wear including a couple of small losses, upper wrap partially separated, previous owner's name in pencil at front wrap, label pasted in at the last page of text apparently correcting an error in the address of a retailer, good or better. Formed in 1847, the company was the family business of Samuel J. Tilden, Governor of New York & 1876 Democratic nominee for president. Their most successful product, known as "Tilden's Extract," was extracted from cannabis indica &, as described on p. 21, "specially recommended for tetanus, hydrophobia, neuralgia, gout, rheumatism, epidemic cholera, , convulsions, hysteria, mental depression, insanity, and uterine hemorrhage." Lightly toned & soiled mostly evident on the versos, tiny loss & a couple of nicks on one, otherwise very good.
Superbly crafted & quite beautiful, these were intended for use on cookie tins.
The New York Biscuit Company was formed in 1889 by William H. Moore. In 1898 Moore joined forces with Adolphus Green (& others), thereafter being known as The National Biscuit Company. The company continues today as Nabisco Brands/ RJR Nabisco.
