Publisher's maroon checked cloth lettered in silver on the spine & upper cover. Binding moderately rubbed & soiled, brief fraying at spine extremities, corners bruised (one rubbed through), hinges started, text block cracked in a couple of places (still secure), gift inscription at ffep, text moderately toned, Good or so. Author John Sergeant Wise, son of Virginia Governor Henry Wise, served with the VMI Corps of Cadets at the Battle of New Market during the Civil War.As noted in the Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Diomed "was a pioneering effort in what soon became a popular literary genre. Written as if in the voice of Wise's favorite hunting dog, it was extremely popular and featured many anecdotes of Wise's life, particularly his love of hunting birds and small game."

Moderately toned & soiled, brief edge wear, otherwise very good.
George Thorndike Angell (1823 – 1909) founded the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1868 & in 1889 founded the American Humane Education Society. Both organizations continue to this day.

Moderate edge wear (particularly the lower corner, diminishing through page 25), some foxing & toning mostly affecting the covers, small mailing label on the rear cover, otherwise Good or better.
This voluminous issue features "White Birch," a stunning full page color illustration by Maxfield Parrish, & a contribution by Albert Payson Terhune entitled "The Scourge" which is illustrated by Robert L. Dickey. Terhune, of course, was the creator of the beloved Lad a Dog series,

Description:
No place [Geneva, New York ?], 1899 - 1909. Original photo album, black card stock with embossed "Photographs" on the upper cover, oblong small quarto (7" x 10.25"), containing 37 silver gelatin photographs mounted to 30 pages of thick black paper, many with manuscript annotations. The photos generally measure 3.25 inches by 5.5 inches & are usually mounted one to a page recto & verso.
Covers partially split at the spine (now repaired on the verso with archival tissue), modest edge wear, some photos a bit light, one photo with small loss at the lower left corner, three photos removed (by others), otherwise Very Good.
One photo depicts "Waldo Hutchins House." Research indicates Mr. Hutchins lived in Geneva, New York.
