Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1977. First edition, this copy inscribed & initialed by Galbraith in the year of publication. Tall 8vo, 365 pp., illustrated. Publisher's gilt-lettered blue cloth in pictorial dust jacket.
Slight foxing at the edges of the text block, otherwise Fine in rubbed dust jacket with moderate edge wear including nicks & small losses, Good or better. Professor Galbraith's ambitous & exhaustive history of economics "from Adam Smith and Herbert Spencer, through Marx and Lenin, to Keynes ..." which was the basis for the BBC documentary series. This copy is inscribed almost certainly to Andrea Hill Williams who for 47 years was Galbraith's book editor and personal assistant: "For Andrea with love/ and thanks for making/ it publishable as well/ as good/ once more/ J.K.G. - 1977."

Modest fraying at spine extremities, corners bumped & rubbed, lightly soiled, hinges cracked, previous owner's name & date at ffep, otherwise good or better The Cooper Union, which offered free tuition until 2014, was the site of one of Abraham Lincoln's most important speeches in which he spoke against the expansion of slavery into the Western Territories & asserted that the Founding Fathers would agree.

Brief fraying at spine extremities, margins lightly sunned, foxing/ toning mostly at early & late leaves, previous owner's name in ink at the first blank page, otherwise very good.
The author was an American philosopher, editor of the North American Review and professor at Harvard. He opposed the views of Adam Smith on free trade, Thomas Malthus on population, & David Ricardo on rent.
Reprinted several times, this title is particularly uncommon in the first edition.
