Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1856. First edition. Octavo (9.5" x 6"), 4 (publisher's advertisements), xxv & 546 pages. Original dark brown cloth lettered in gilt on the spine & decorated in blind on the covers.
Brief fraying at spine extremities, margins lightly sunned, foxing/ toning mostly at early & late leaves, previous owner's name in ink at the first blank page, otherwise very good.
The author was an American philosopher, editor of the North American Review and professor at Harvard. He opposed the views of Adam Smith on free trade, Thomas Malthus on population, & David Ricardo on rent.
Reprinted several times, this title is particularly uncommon in the first edition.
