Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844) attended the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) before his career in finance, which included serving as the president of the Second Bank of the United States. In this address, Biddle advised the most recent graduates of the college to model themselves on Cicero, if called upon to become statesmen. "It cannot be that our free nation can long endure the vulgar dominion of ignorance and profligacy." In Very Good Condition: disbound; light foxing throughout; otherwise, clean and tight.

Black endpapers. First English language edition. The author, Victor Henri Rochefort, Marquis de Rochefort-Luçay (1831-1913), was a journalist and dramatist who was elected to the lower house of the French parliament in 1869. Following the revolution of 1871 he was arrested and sentenced to transportation to New Caledonia, which is where this volume ends. Following the general amnesty in 1880 he returned to France, where he continued to be actively involved in his country's political life.
